A pre-Spartacus prequel about life in the House of Batiatus. In the opener, a younger Batiatus is placed in command of his father's gladiator-training school, which leads him to use one of the most accomplished fighters to curry favor with a nobleman.

A week has passed since he received his severe beating at the hands of Tullius' men and Batiatus has now recovered sufficiently to leave his bed. Tullius sends him a message to the effect that he acted hastily and offers a compromise. Batiatus is in no mood to compromise however and plans his own revenge. Quintillius Varis comes to Capua to select gladiators for his games and Gaia, who knows him, plots to have him come to Batiatus' house. Batiatus will seemingly go to any length to impress Varis but his blind enthusiasm does not sit well with the men.

Batiatus is pleased with himself having arranged for Gannicus to appear in the primus of Quintillius Varis' games. He is not however prepared for the return of his father Titus who arrives home to find his son cavorting with Gaia and Lecretia. He treats his son with disdain and has heard of the mess he's made of things with Tullius. He laughs when he hears that Gannicus will represent the house in the games and sets out to undo everything they young Batiatus has managed to arrange.

The younger Batiatus is having more than just a bit of difficulty accepting his father's ongoing - and seemingly permanent - presence at home. The patriarch refuses to take on the powerful Tullius and continually tells his son to learn his place. When Gaia sees someone she had once met in Rome, she introduces him to Lucretia and he immediately comments on what he has heard about the pleasures available at her home.

Gaia's death strengthens Quintus Batiatus' resolve to get revenge against Tullius. The elder Batiatus invites Tullius to his home and is offered prime places in the forthcoming games, in return for Gannicus. In the arena, the elder Batiatus has decided to assess the skills of his gladiators, most of whom he is unfamiliar with, by having them fight one another.

Batiatus mourns the death of his father and blames Tullius for all that has befallen them. Gannicus pushes Batiatus to complete his sale to Tullius so that he may seek revenge for the House of Batiatus but Solonius counsels caution and a more sensible, if final, solution. Solonius protects his own position as well, however. Naevia replaces Melitta and Lucretia promises that no man will ever touch her as happened to Diona,who makes an unexpected return. The new arena is complete and the games begin.

In its war on the Greek peninsula, the Romans convince the Thracians to join them in defeating the Getae, who have been raiding Thracian villages for generations. The Thracians are fierce warriors and prove to be valiant in battle. They are deceived by the Roman commander, Claudius Glaber, who orders them to fight against the Greeks, something they had not counted on. One of them in particular refuses to fight and rebels against the Romans only to lose the fight and is enslaved along with his wife Sura. He is anything but cooperative and refuses to do as he is told leading to frequent conflict with his trainer and other gladiators, particularly Crixus. Claudius Glaber would still like to see him dead and takes delight in telling him that his wife is still alive and that his men raped her after they were taken into bondage. Spartacus continues to train in Batiatus' gladiatorial combat school. His tempestuous co-operation given in exchange for Batiatus' promise to search for Sura. Meanwhile Batiatus' money troubles and the drought continue. With the Vulcanalia approaching, Spartacus is determined to get nominated to the primus, the feature attraction, though it means fighting the undefeated Crixus.

After being defeated by Crixus in the arena, Spartacus is sent to the underworld to fight for Batiatus, who now is plagued by debts. There, in a place called “The Pits”, the men are no longer men and are forced to kill their opponents in order to survive. After some victories, Spartacus has a dream about his wife, in which he believes he will not survive his next battle. Because of this, he agrees to die in the battle and encourages Batiatus to bet against him, only if he promises to keep searching for Spartacus' wife after his death. In hopes to bringing rain to Capua, there are some games approaching in which the main event, called Primus, is about to be an epic battle between Spartacus/Crixus and Theokoles, the Shadow of Death, who was never been defeated. Meanwhile, Batiatus discover who is behind his attack in the Pits and Lucretia wants to get pregnant.

Spartacus, now declared the New Champion of Capua, is surprised by the news that his wife Sura has been found, so he draws a plan to gain his freedom. Meanwhile, Barca's freedom is in jeopardy when Batiatus learns that Ovidious' son is alive.

Spartacus is forced to play a roman fighter in the games against a group of thracians, as he recalls his wife and how he met her. Meanwhile, there are some mysteries surrounding Barca's freedom as Pietros tries to deal with it.

Batiatus purchases a new group of gladiator trainees and considers selling Crixus. Meanwhile Crixus is still not fully healed but chafes at Spartacus assuming the role of champion. Ilithyia gets her own gladiator-in-training but trouble arises.

Licinia wants to have a quality time with Spartacus, but Lucretia believes that he has spent so much time without a woman and send a slave to him to practice. When Ilithya learns the intentions of her friend, she wants a quality time for herself with Crixus, which may affect Lucretia's state of mind. -
Numerious, the Magistrate's son, is about to celebrate his birthday and the celebration will be at the house of Batiatus, so he decides to have Crixus and Spartacus facing each other in a demonstration battle. But when Ilithyia approaches Numerious, he changes his decision drastically.

The Magistrate is kidnapped and held captive by Batiatus in response of the events at his son's birthday. Meanwhile, Spartacus deals with the wounds (both physical and emotional) and some dreams reveal something disturbing too.

Glaber arrives at Capua to meet Batiatus and discuss the terms of support the house, but he wants to see the legend of Spartacus fighting before he makes his final decision. But that event leads to an important twist leaded by Crixus, which may affect all the intentions of Batiatus.
